The ritual that i have document happens all along the coastlines of South Africa. They travel from all over South Africa to do their baptism, but is more a cleansing ritual than a baptism , they do it to cleanse themselves of Sin, bad or evil spirits. Their religion is a mixture of Christianity and worshiping their ancestors. The groups of people i filmed belonged to the Zion Christian group. To the on looker it may look like a brutal or even violent ritual the way congregation members get slammed into the waves reapearly, almost to the point of drowning and then beaten, but they are not being hit out anger but rather to chase out the evils spirits but also they are being hit for good luck and happiness. I am delighted and fascinated, there so much beauty and symbolism to this practice. They travel from 1 to 2 days to get the beach come in as far as Botswana and Zimbabwe. The entire ritual last about 2 hours before they jump back into their busses or taxis to head home so they can be at work on Monday.
